Duh: Part 2

West sees glittering prizes ahead in giant oilfields [in Iraq]:

Iraq has oil reserves of 112billion barrels, second only to Saudi Arabia, which has some 265billion barrels. Iraqi reserves are seven times those of the combined UK and Norwegian sectors of the North Sea. But the prize for oil companies could be even greater. Iraq estimates that its eventual reserves could be as high as 220billion barrels.

Three giant southern fields – Majnoon, West Qurna and Nahr Umar have the capacity to produce as much as Kuwait. The first two could each equal Qatar’s production of 700,000 barrels a day. “There is nothing like it anywhere else in the world. Its the big prize,” Mr Butt said.

Duh

American elections dictate timing of an attack:

There is an opportunity to strike in the autumn of next year, officials say, but waiting until then risks the fighting spilling over into 2004, leaving President Saddam Hussein’s fate unresolved at the start of a presidential election year, something that Republican political strategists are loath to contemplate.

Despite Mr Bush’s early rhetoric against Saddam, his room for manoeuvre has always been limited by the calendar. Reports of an invasion being launched this autumn were always likely to be wide of the mark. Americans go to the polls in early November for the critical mid-term elections and Republican strategists do not want their quest to regain control of the Senate wrecked by the unpredictability of war.

Although Mr Bush enjoys the tacit support of many leading Democrats for taking on Saddam, that could change in the ruthlessly partisan atmosphere likely to prevail in 2004. Mistakes and reverses in a war that left thousands of Americans dead could hurt Mr Bush in a presidential campaign, especially if exploited by a canny Democrat who presented criticism as patriotism.

American puppet requests foreign body guards

Our pinocchio in Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai, has to be getting a little worried as his corrupt government disintegrates before his eyes. Frequent assassinations and assassination attempts are not a good sign that the people feel you are leading them in the right direction. That’s why he is considering an offer from the west to provide him ‘international peacekeepers’ as bodyguards. Let’s hope the Afghan people, the descendants of the great Khans and the Turkic hordes can overthrow this farce.

These are not the detainees you are looking for

Under pressure from civil liberties groups to release the names and status of illegally held detainees, the Federal government has been been quickly deporting most of the people it kidnapped in the wake of Sept. 11. No doubt in some cases, these people who were never charged with a crime, will be passed along to pro-US states where they will likely be tortured and detained further. See the US is officially against torture, but it likes to have friends who can get their hands dirty.

Copyright should die

NY Times had a good article on the Warez scene. I can’t believe the jail sentences these guys got, four years in one guy’s case. Just goes to show what happens when you present a threat to the engines of Capital. They throw the book at you. Rapists get off with lighter sentences.

Bad cops, bad cops

Have you seen these videos with cops hitting people with batons and punching them? There’s absolutely no excuse for that. I have spoken.

Sigh

Bush turns a blind eye while Israel ushers in it’s own mini-Reich. Israel has undertaken efforts to occupy all of Palestine, take over East Jerusalem, and has passed racist legislation which will prevent non-Jews from owning land in Israeli settlements. I don’t really see how this differs from anything the Nazi’s did during World War II. If anything, the Israelis are displaying a dangerous mix of amnesia, race hatred, and, above all, hypocrisy. It is the height of insanity to claim eternal victim status while you assassinate, murder, and crush an ethnic minority. I hope I live to see the day when Israel collapses under the weight of its pride and arrogance.

Update

A very good friend of mine has started a blog and I think it’s really great. We were penpals for a long time many moons ago and it’s nice to see her voice in print again. I always admired her way of writing.
