Trendy

If you’re attuned to what people wear and do you’ll notice fads. Why do people follow the lead of other people? What are you thinking when you wear certain clothes or buy certain products? How do you decide what has value? Here are a few things I’ve noticed:

  1. Nalgene lexan water bottles – This is a big deal where I work. If you haven’t seen these Nalgene bottles they’re supposed to be nigh unbreakable and apparently don’t leave a bad taste in the water. That’s just the justification you give if anyone asks you about them. The real reason people have them is because it says: “I spent ten dollars on my water bottle, and I’m health conscious.” A lot of our designers carry these around to stay perpetually hydrated and cool as hell. It’s the perfect complement to your extreme lifestyle. It’s interesting to see the personality differences between programmers and designers. A programmer starts with the question, “Does it work and is it worth it?” A designer starts with, “Is it cool?” Most programmers would never carry around a Nalgene water bottle.
  2. Livestrong wrist-bands – This is old hat now, but you’ll still see people wearing the yellow Lance Armstrong Foundation wrist bands. It conveys the same health conscious / active lifestyle message. It has the added benefit of representing the crusade against testicle cancer, which shows that you care, for real. As Lance says, “Yellow is the reason I’m here.” Heavy.
  3. iPods – The iPod is a great gadget, but it is also trendy and expensive. It was a smart move to sell the iPod with white ear buds because it provides a high-visibility way to show everyone that you have one. The downside is that people often get mugged for their iPods for the same reason, so it might be a good idea to get a different set of headphones when you’re out in public.
