Under pressure from civil liberties groups to release the names and status of illegally held detainees, the Federal government has been been quickly deporting most of the people it kidnapped in the wake of Sept. 11. No doubt in some cases, these people who were never charged with a crime, will be passed along to pro-US states where they will likely be tortured and detained further. See the US is officially against torture, but it likes to have friends who can get their hands dirty.

Copyright should die
NY Times had a good article on the Warez scene. I can’t believe the jail sentences these guys got, four years in one guy’s case. Just goes to show what happens when you present a threat to the engines of Capital. They throw the book at you. Rapists get off with lighter sentences.

Bad cops, bad cops
Have you seen these videos with cops hitting people with batons and punching them? There’s absolutely no excuse for that. I have spoken.

Sigh
Bush turns a blind eye while Israel ushers in it’s own mini-Reich. Israel has undertaken efforts to occupy all of Palestine, take over East Jerusalem, and has passed racist legislation which will prevent non-Jews from owning land in Israeli settlements. I don’t really see how this differs from anything the Nazi’s did during World War II. If anything, the Israelis are displaying a dangerous mix of amnesia, race hatred, and, above all, hypocrisy. It is the height of insanity to claim eternal victim status while you assassinate, murder, and crush an ethnic minority. I hope I live to see the day when Israel collapses under the weight of its pride and arrogance.
- Ha’Aretz: A racist bill: These tortuous formulations were designed to soften opposition to the bill, but they fail to conceal the fact that its primary purpose is to prevent non-Jewish citizens of the state from living in certain places, in violation of fundamental civil rights.
- Israelis kill top militant More Israeli assassinations performed outside the law. So much for due process.
- Military chief anxious to step up Gaza assault
- Israel targets Palestinian moderate Liquidating the opposition…even the moderates.

Update
A very good friend of mine has started a blog and I think it’s really great. We were penpals for a long time many moons ago and it’s nice to see her voice in print again. I always admired her way of writing.

Erroneus Julius Caesar quotation
The quotation below attributed to Julius Caesar is good, but as an astute visitor pointed out to me, it is most probably erroneous, a fake. I have not been able to find the source for it anywhere from anyone.
Wikipedia possesses the same quotation and this was last edited in February 2002 which is the earliest I have seen it appear.
- From Kuro5hin.org on this quotation.
- Someone at Mojo’s Daily Grind reports it as first appearing in October of 2001.

Quotations
“Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind. And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and gladly so. How do I know? For this is what I have done. And I am Caesar.” -Julius Caesar
There is nothing more difficult to plan, more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to manage than the creation of a new system. For the initiator has the enmity of all who would profit by the preservation of the old system and merely lukewarm defenders in those who would gain by the new one. – Machiavelli – 1513

Priceless Cockburn
From Counterpunch:
I’ll say this for the Pres. He’s lucky, just like Bill. Of course under Bill the country felt it was sharing in the luck, whereas under W it’s been one damn thing after another. Thus far the history of the Bush Presidency has been the history of falling masonry. President Rubble. But, just like Bill, W. has been the huge beneficiary of Terror. With Bill it was the Oklahoma Bombing. It turned his presidency around. With W it was 9/11. Without it he’d be a laughing stock inside the national jurisdiction as well as overseas.
And now he’s has the gift of a California court’s ruling that the pledge of allegiance runs counter to the Constitution, thereby allowing every politician in the country up to and including W the pleasures of posturing in front of the flag and declaring unflagging trust in God, who is doing little or nothing these days to merit such childish confidence.
Welcome to Bush’s America, where the Supreme Court has now ruled that vouchers are okay. So a child is free to go to Catholic School at public expense and be sodomized by a priest, preferably while both recite the pledge of allegiance.
