I need some suggestions

My music collection is getting stale. I need some musical recommendations. Turn me on to something new. I’ll listen to anything. Soul, world music, jazz, new stuff, whatever. I don’t even know what to call other stuff. I have a preference for vocal stuff since I like to listen to music to hear other people and to sing. Here are some recommendations of my own, to start off:

The Dells, Didn’t I Blow Your Mind, Otis Redding, These Arms of Mine, Sting, Mad About You, Ron Sexsmith, These Days, Depeche Mode, Everything Counts

Obviously, I need some new blood. Please help!

  1. You don’t usually seem to like stuff that I do so I don’t know if I should make any suggestions, but I think you could find a bunch of new stuff just trying out things that people with similar taste to you like. (One easy way to do that would be to look up people who like the same stuff as you on friendster and then see what other things they like.)

Also, sometimes looking at best-of lists of people with good taste or musicians that you like can give you a good start in a new direction. I remember in late 1989 reading a list Michael Stipe made of the best records of the 80s (in Rolling Stone). It had all the classics: Psychocandy, My Aim is True, good dBs records, the Cure. Now that R.E.M. sucks his taste does too, but that sure was a good list.

Another good strategy for finding new stuff is to find a good music magazine and read the reviews. But it can be hard to find a good music magazine these days.

I guess I’ll be thinking about if there’s anything specific I can recommend to you, that would appeal to you specifically, and I’ll let you know if I come up with anything.

  2. Col. James Braddock

Ever listen to the jazz band Galactic? They are from New Orleans. I have two of their CDs if you want to listen to them, and i’m right down the office way.

  3. vocals, huh? i just went and discovered blossom dearie for the first time in the jazz section at my public library. i also have this thing lately for the blind boys from alabama. for “newer” music there’s alison krause and gillian welch. peter gabriel’s last CD “up” is very good. but if you’re frustrated with what’s out there it doesn’t hurt to just curl up with some nice tom waits back catalog.

  4. You might like The Faint. It’s for people who like the jerk off to Depeche Mode.

  5. Great suggestions. I will be sampling a lot of things tonight.

  6. I heard a new guy on the radio today – Damien Rice – with Lisa somebody – supposed to be a great album too – the one song I heard on 107.1 is awesome.

  7. I always enjoy listening to music that’s not in English, especially when I’m writing. Recommended: Garmarna (Swedish), Os Mutantes (Portuguese), and maybe even some Japanese pop. Yes, I admit it. I love Japanese pop music.

  8. neko case, blacklisted… always at the top of my list for “has a voice.”
